Fortnite led all forms of content on Twitch for the month of July, but a serious decrease year-over-year in hours watched leaves the door open for other forms of content to push into the upper tier.
The following titles are ranked according to the total number of hours watched on Twitch, from July 1-31, with data compiled using TEO Access.
While Fortnite saw a decrease in hours watched from July 2018, other forms of content, like Just Chatting (formerly “IRL”), and Grand Theft Auto V have continued to see bumps in hours watched.
Following a 2018 summer that was dominated by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and other Fortnite influencers, the ranks of top content on Twitch experienced much more parity this July. Five out of the top 10 forms of content on Twitch had 59M hours watched or more, up from just two last year. Meanwhile, the emergence of Teamfight Tactics has only added to the competition for viewers on Twitch.
Top Content: Fortnite
Despite Fortnite’s loss of overall viewership from last year, the title was still the most-watched on Twitch in July of this year. This was in part due to the World Cup at the end of the month.
Turner “Tfue” Tenney led all channels on Fortnite for the month with 7.9M hours watched across 181 hours of airtime, but the main Fortnite channel covering the World Cup managed to muster up 4.4M hours watched with just 26 hours of airtime, largely over a three-day weekend. Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was close behind with 4.2M hours watched during July over the course of 108 hours of airtime.
What’s Trending: Chit Chatter
The Just Chatting category has seen strong development since coming into existence in the fall of last year, but July was the strongest month the category has had so far this year. The category’s 76.7M hours watched in July marked a month-over-month increase of more than 10M from 65.5M hours watched in July.
Though the rise in viewership for Just Chatting hasn’t necessarily been rapid, the steady pace of growth signifies that a certain amount of consistency for the category. As other titles see significant jumps and drops in hours watched while some top influencers bounce from game to game, the strength of “Just Chatting” with an audience provides an ever-growing level of stability to Twitch streamers.
