The Batman: Watch the first trailer for Matt Reeves’ Batman from DC FanDome

Director Matt Reeves revealed the first footage of The Batman, his original take on the Caped Crusader, at DC FanDome on Saturday. It’s our first look at Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight in action, but that’s not all Reeves showed at FanDome today.

The first The Batman trailer is a dark, violent slice of the film, showing Batman unleashing vengeance on a group of Gotham City lowlifes, while we hear The Riddler’s rhymes (and Nirvana’s “Underneath the Bridge”).

On Thursday, Reeves teased this weekend’s The Batman reveal with a look at the film’s logo and a new piece of artwork illustrated by DC Comics artist and chief creative officer Jim Lee. Reeves and Warner Bros. have been offering glimpses of The Batman for months now, including a camera test featuring Pattinson in cape and cowl, and set photos of the extremely muscular Batmobile. Now we’ve seen what Walter Hamada, Warner Bros. Pictures president of DC-based film production, described earlier in the FanDome event as “Year Two Batman.”

The Batman is scheduled to hit movie theaters on Oct. 21, 2021. Filming on the project was suspended earlier this year due to COVID-19-related concerns, but is expected to resume in September.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is a “noir-driven” original story, according to the director, who’s known for this work on Cloverfield, Let Me In, and War for the Planet of the Apes. In addition to Pattinson, The Batman stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler.

We’ll get even more live-action Batman on the silver screen in 2022, with Warner Bros.’ upcoming movie based on The Flash. That film will feature multiple Batmans, with Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton confirmed to reprise their Bat-roles in the multiverse-focused flick.
