Red Dead Redemption 2 Borderlands 3, and GTA Online are significant contributors to Take-Two Interactive’s quarterly revenues, as stated in its most recent earnings call (via VG247).
Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of 2K Games and Rockstar Games, so you could call them a pretty big deal in the world of games. It counts Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, The Outer Worlds, WWE 2K20, and more in its collection of properties, and these titles have all done rather well.
First and foremost, Red Dead Redemption 2 has shipped 26.5 million units worldwide. It’s been ticking along nicely, and it’s an impressive statistic for a game that shipped 17 million copies in the two weeks after it launched. The PC port released this week, and of course, its numbers haven’t been mentioned as it is categorised as a third quarter launch. When we do see those statistics, it will be intriguing to see if there was another surge of interest for a PC version, and especially after the Rockstar Games Launcher experienced a slightly shaky start.
Player spending in Grand Theft Auto Online broke records with a rise of 23 per cent, boosted by the addition of the Diamond Casino and Resort. ‘We now expect Grand Theft Auto Online to grow in fiscal 2020 as a result of its better-than-expected performance fiscal year to date and improved outlook for the balance of the year,’ said Lainie Goldstein, Take-Two Interactive’s chief financial officer.
Borderlands 3 did exceptionally well when it launched in September. The game sold over five million units in its first five days, earning it the title of the fastest-selling game in the 2K Games’ history, and is its highest-selling title for PC. Now, Take-Two Interactive revealed that sales statistics continue to skyrocket with a total of seven million units shipped worldwide. The developer Gearbox Software has a ‘robust’ plan for post-launch support that includes free seasonal updates like the Bloody Harvest.
Take-Two Interactive also mentioned the ‘four major downloadable campaign expansions’ coming to Borderlands 3 that will be purchasable through a Season Pass or as individual packs upon launch. The first of the expansions is set to arrive this winter, so players will have even more on their plates in the cel-shaded shlooter.
Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is cited to be a critical and commercial success, although Take-Two Interactive did not include the numbers or percentages of how well the game has done. And, the company addressed the problematic launch of WWE 2K20, admitting that it was ‘disappointed’ by its reception. It iterated that developer Visual Concepts has worked on a patch to fix the glitches and will ‘continue to make further enhancements to the gameplay experience.’
