Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Galarian Ponyta has been officially confirmed in a new trailer, and comes with new information on its type, abilities, and its lore.
A little bushy tail and galloping hooves were seen and heard at various moments during the twenty-four hour livestream of the Glimwood Tangle, a forest in the Galar region. The promise of a Ponyta kept a lot of people watching what could be argued as an uneventful event. Impidimp, Morelull, Swirlix, Phantump, and Shiinotic wandered past and then almost at the end, a never-before-seen Pokémon appeared.
Galarian Ponyta is no longer the Fire Horse Pokémon and is called the Unique Horn Pokémon. Nice one, Game Freak. Its fluffy appearance is the outcome of exposure to the ‘overflowing life energy’ of the Glimwood Tangle, and its design seems to draw from Celtic mythology. The energy is enveloped in its majestic mane and will light up if the arcane energy is especially strong in its surroundings.
Pastel Veil and Run Away are the new Pokémon’s abilities. Run Away is self-explanatory — it lets the Pokémon escape and ignore any trapping moves set on it — but Pastel Veil is totally unique. This ability ensures immunity to poisoning moves and extends to its allies, meaning that these status effects will be cured once Ponyta is on the field.
Plenty presumed that this Ponyta would be Fairy type but in fact they’re Psychic type, making them an appropriate foil to Fighting type SirFetch’d. The Wild Duck Pokémon is exclusive to Pokémon Sword and Ponyta will be exclusive to Pokémon Shield. Vindication.
Pokémon Sword and Shield will release on November 15 for the Nintendo Switch. Watch the Galarian Ponyta reveal below.
