Learn everything you need to know about Fortnite’s new “Performance Mode.”

Epic Games is implementing a new feature into Fortnite: Battle Royale, which will hopefully clear up graphical performance and frames per second (FPS) issues that continue to affect the game. This new feature, dubbed “Performance Mode,” will release in Alpha and reduce some of the ongoing headaches that come with inconsistent FPS and other lingering issues. Epic also plans to address file size concerns and low-resolution textures with Performance Mode. The new feature will be live tomorrow with patch v15.10, which is the first update since Epic released Chapter 2 – Season 5.

PC not quite what it used to be?

With the next update, the new Fortnite Performance Mode lightens the load on your CPU and GPU boosting your PC FPS. Fortnite will run better and maintain a smooth framerate.

Players have taken issue with Epic for the game’s lack of optimization. Each season, FPS seems to vary drastically, and lower quality PCs struggle. The developer’s latest blog post provided context to Performance Mode.

“Beginning December 15th, we’re launching a new performance mode on all PCs that meet Fortnite’s minimum specifications. Available in Alpha, Performance Mode will be selectable through the in-game settings menu and offers significant performance gains by trading out visual quality to lower memory usage and lighten the load on CPU and GPU. For players already on low scalability settings or less powerful hardware, this mode will allow the game to run better than ever before and maintain a smoother framerate.”

The new feature should enhance graphical qualities, meaning those without the latest hardware will have a better experience. Performance Mode also offers the choice of turning off high-resolution textures, which will reduce Fortnite’s overall file size. Epic did note that machines with a solid-state drive (SSD) or 6GB of RAM would benefit the most from this new in-game rendering option. Players with lower specs may not see much of a difference when using Performance Mode.

How to Activate Performance Mode

Follow the instructions below to activate Performance Mode.

  1. Open your ‘Options’ menu in Fortnite
  2. Select the ‘Video’ tab
  3. Locate ‘Rendering Mode’ under ‘Advanced Graphics’
  4. Click the arrow until you find ‘Performance (Alpha)’
  5. Click ‘Apply’ in the lower right corner of your screen

How to Opt-out of High-Resolution Textures

Opting out of high-resolution textures will remove 14GB of space off Fortnite’s massive file size. Follow the instructions below to turn of ‘High-Resolution Textures’

  1.  Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2.  Click on Library.
  3.  Locate Fortnite and click on the three dots next to it.
  4. Click on Options.
  5. Check the box next to Use High-Quality Textures.

Performance Mode will release early on December 15 alongside patch v15.10!
