New Nioh 2 gameplay trailer reveals its release window

At Tokyo Game Show, Nioh 2 debuted a new gameplay trailer that shows off what players will look forward to in the sequel, and unveiled its release window.

The new Nioh 2 trailer is chock full of sumptuous visuals and ghastly Yokai creatures, and its new protagonist seems caught between two worlds. The Dark Realm encroaches on the land of the living once again, and clashes with the huge civil wars wreaking havoc within Japan. Thankfully, the hero has allies, but it does look like the warrior is a lone wolf, showing off his combat prowess fighting all kinds of Yokai manifestations.

In a post on the PlayStation blog, creative director Tom Lee revealed how Team Ninja pick and choose from Japanese mythology to the greatest effect in the Nioh series. ‘Our selection process for implementing Yokai into the experience goes far beyond simply choosing the most popular or well known versions,’ he explained. ‘Instead, we meticulously select each creature based on their unique characteristics to properly compliment specific integrations. This approach ultimately ensures a wide range of variation and scope to the action. Which is super important in keeping you guys engaged and challenged at all times!’

Attendees of Tokyo Game Show will have the opportunity to get hands on with a demo of Nioh 2. Mezuki is a horrifying horse-headed demon that wields a saw blade to cut down anything that stands in its path. Players will also contend with the Sudama, tree spirits that have now become ghosts and strive for material possessions. The theme of duality and light against the dark is a central axis in Nioh 2, and was the inspiration for its half-human, half-Yokai samurai warrior protagonist.

Nioh 2 will launch for PlayStation 4 in early 2020. Watch the gameplay reveal trailer below.
