Mentioned in this article

  • NBC is developing a half-hour esports comedy called The Squad that reunites The Big Bang Theory writer-producer Anthony Del Broccolo and actor Johnny Galecki.
  • The Squad centers on a group of friends and enemies who “find companionship and common ground in their mutual love of esports.”
  • This is the second esports-related comedy ordered during the current TV development cycle after Rick Fox’s untitled show, loosely based on his experience purchasing Echo Fox, was picked up by CBS.

Television network NBC has ordered a script for The Squad, a half-hour, multi-camera comedy about esports.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will revolve around “a new group of friends (and sometimes enemies) who find companionship and common ground in their mutual love of esports.”

Former The Big Bang Theory writer-producer Anthony Del Broccolo will write the script and executive produce. Actor Johnny Galecki, who most likely plans to star on The Squad, will also be an executive producer through his Alcide Bava Productions banner. Alcide Bava’s Holly Brown will also exec produce, and the company’s executive Cory Wood has been set as a producer. Warner Bros. Television, which also produced Big Bang Theory, will serve as the studio.

A script order means that the network has agreed to move forward with the development of the project. If, after several script revisions and notes from the studio and network, NBC is still interested, it will order the filming of pilot episodes.

The Squad is the second esports comedy TV show sold during the current development cycle. Television network CBS has committed to a put pilot order for a comedy series inspired by the life of Rick Fox, founder of esports organization Echo Fox. The untitled project will feature a retired NBA basketball player who purchases an esports team in an attempt to get closer to his son.
