Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is the new virtual reality game from Respawn Entertainment and Oculus Studios, promising to deliver an ‘epic AAA experience like no other.’
In 2017, Respawn announced its partnership with Oculus Studios and confirmed that an ‘amazing first person combat experience for VR’ was in the pipeline during an earnings call in 2018. Speculation swirled that it could have been Titanfall 3, but those theories were put to rest promptly by the developer. Now, at Oculus Connect in California, the game has been officially unveiled as Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond’s story campaign places the player in the boots of an Allied agent of the Office of Strategic Services, attempting to thwart Nazi operations and victories across Europe. As well as a multiplayer mode, the game will have a gallery that lets the player ‘sit with WWII veterans and survivors to hear their stories while witnessing first-hand the events and locations that have shaped our history.’
The Medal of Honor franchise has changed hands multiple times in its history, and one of its original creators has been brought on board to this new iteration. Peter Hirschmann, writer of the first Medal of Honor game, said that the World War II shooter franchise has offered critical insight to the harrowing and inspirational stories of soldiers. ‘Thanks to VR, we can actually put a player in the boots of a WWII soldier with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond — the immersion that the Rift Platform provides lets us tell that story in a really meaningful way, sharing the full impact of the sacrifices and camaraderie of our shared history,’ he explained.
‘Interviewing veterans of WWII was an immense privilege and allowed us to ensure its respect and faithfulness to those who served,’ Hirschmann added. ‘They’re helping us drive home the full emotional and historical weight of this subject matter with players in a way that really resonates.’
