Little Town Hero’s combat mechanics are powered by imagination

Game Freak’s Little Town Hero has received brand new gameplay footage that shows off its environments, characters, and its interesting combat system (via games radar).

The art style is simply spellbinding, and the score has been produced by Toby Fox and Hitomi Sato, the composers behind Undertale and the Pokémon series soundtracks. As a turn-based RPG, Little Town Hero is standard form for the developer, but the way its battle mechanics were described was quite the head scratcher. The hero Axe would use his ideas to take on the monsters terrorising the town, rather than a sword and a shield.

Now, this new gameplay reveal explains how this will work. Upon beginning a battle, Axe imagines how to defeat the behemothic beast opposite him. These are termed ‘Izzats’ and float around in a radial menu. By using Power — a limited mystical resource that is available once per turn — these Izzits will be turned into Dazzits that will be either defensive, offensive, or unique combat moves.

Dazzits differ in their attack and defense stats and each turn will pit Axe’s Dazzit against the enemy Dazzit. If Axe’s Dazzit stats are higher than his foe’s, the opposing Dazzit will Break. If the adversary’s Dazzits are depleted then Axe is victorious, and any remaining Izzits will be available for the next battle encounter. Eureka Points are rewarded from the fights, and these will boost and upgrade Axe’s ideas through a skill tree system. Players are encouraged to mix and match their Eureka Point spend to create a unique tactical build.

Axe will hop around the Town, much like hopping a number of spaces on a tabletop game, and find allies and friends to aid him in battle. There are even Gimmicks that will become pivotal to taking on the colossal monsters, and in the trailer we see a big cannon used to exactly that effect.

Little Town Hero is out for Nintendo Switch on October 16. Watch the new gameplay footage below.
