Gears 5 multiplayer modes will be supported in live-service-style quarterly updates called Operations, as revealed in a blog post by Microsoft.
Operations will occur every three months, and include new characters, modes, maps, features, and game balance tweaks, expectedly. Each new Operation will introduce a new Tour of Duty, which are campaigns that stretch the season with new unlockable cosmetics on offer. Three daily objectives and seasonal medals give players Stars to improve their Rank, and the rewards are unique to that season’s Tour of Duty. It mimics a Battle Pass model, but it’s completely free. Quite nice.
There will be a weekly featured Escape Hive to complete, rewards based on division rank, and new customisation content added to the Supply and the Store. Next month, The Coalition will release the first character roster update which will bring new COG heroes for each of the three multiplayer modes. The studio also teased that spooks are coming to Special Events in October, along with classic Events from previous entries. If you can’t wait that long, Dave Bautista is coming to Gears 5 as a playable character on September 15.
Gears 5 launches on Xbox One and PC on September 6 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, and then on September 10 for Xbox Game Pass members.
