Epic is replacing this year’s Winter Royale with Frosty Frenzy.

The end of 2020 is near, and for competitive Fortnite: Battle Royale players, that typically means the annual Winter Royale tournament is on the docket. Epic Games hosted its yearly winter tournament the last two years, and competitive players did not expect anything different after the recent release of Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 5. However, Epic Games had other plans. The @FNCompetitive Twitter account dropped a bombshell on the Fortnite scene. A new winter-themed tournament, dubbed Frosty Frenzy, will replace the Winter Royale this year.

Frosty Frenzy appears to be a new take on Fortnite’s annual winter tournaments. Most players will remember the Winter Royale of years past, which apparently will no longer remain in the tournament circuit. Frosty Frenzy will take its place, and although the details are almost nonexistent, we know that it will be a trio tournament taking place on December 12 and December 13. Epic Games recently announced that the tournament standard would be trios through 2021 in a recent competitive update, so it’s not surprising to see the same format for Frosty Frenzy.

Winter Royale History

In 2018, the Winter Royale featured a $1 million prize pool for the North American and European regions. Winter Royale 2018 and other Skirmish tournaments paved the way for some of Fortnite’s top players. Some household names, including Tom “72hrs” Mulligan, Davis “Ceice” McClellan, Trevor “Funk” Siegler and Ryan “Chap” Chaplo populated the top of NA’s leaderboard. On the European side, Dmitri “mitr0” Van de Vrie finished in third place. Now, there are many more regions involved in Fortnite, which made Winter Royale 2019 more interesting.

Epic Games shook competitive Fortnite in December 2019 with its yearly Winter Royale announcement. Chapter 2 – Season 1 had just debuted, and players were ready to experience competitive tournaments again. Epic went beyond, and extended its reach to console players and increased the prize pool to $15 million. The competition encompassed more than two regions, and some players journeyed to other servers with hopes of maximizing their winnings. NA West controller duo – wavyjacob and Thomuss – stood out amongst the pack, having won day one and two of the Winter Royale and finishing third on the final day.

The developers seem ready to move on from the Winter Royale tournament name. Now, players from all seven competitive Fortnite regions will compete in Frosty Frenzy. Epic Games will release more details tomorrow regarding the scoring system and prize pool. It will be the first real competitive test in Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 5.
