Today, Berlin-based game developer META Games announced it raised a $2M seed financing led by BITKRAFT Esports Ventures. Further investors that participated in the funding include Everblue Management, Crest Capital, and Klaas Kersting; founder and CEO of Phoenix Games.
According to the developer, the new funding will be used to complete game development on its upcoming mobile game RIVALS, a management simulator game inspired by multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) esports such as League of Legends and Dota 2, and to begin development on future mobile games for esports fans.
META Games developed the RIVALS Esports Manager game with the input of pro esports teams. In the game, players can manage their own pro esports team, compete in PvP leagues, and trade players in their roster. The game is based on a real-time simulation to create a highlight-reel experience of a MOBA game.
Part of the funding will support the developer in expanding its scope to match the variety of genres represented in the spectrum of esports. META Games stated that it looks to offer specific dedicated products that cater to audiences beyond just MOBAs or first-person shooters (FPSs) with its future games.
“By having the most popular PC esports game genres in the palm of their hand, players now have the excitement of a pro esports coach in a snack-size, on-the-go experience,” commented BITKRAFT founding partner, Malte Barth in a release. “Similar to traditional sports, each esports genre is distinct and has its own unique fanbase, which is why META Games’ vision to bring esports-themed games to these diverse, loyal audiences is extremely necessary. We believe with this funding; this strong, proven team can continue its momentum of developing mobile games that address the entire audience of esports fans worldwide.”
META Games was founded in 2017 by Roman Frank, Philipp Karstaedt, and Arvid Hahn, and first became a part of the BITKRAFT Seed Portfolio in 2017. Both Everblue Management (Runtime, FanAI, and Epics) as well as Crest Capital (Quarterback) previously partook in investment rounds in esports companies with BITKRAFT.
