Next year Call of Duty esports will return to its roots with 4v4 competitive play coming back for the 2021 season

Following the conclusion of the 2020 season, the Call of Duty League has announced a return to 4v4 competitive play for the Black Ops Cold War season. This means that one player from each team will be either dropped from the team or demoted to the subs bench. This will result in possibly 12 players being removed from the Call of Duty League as teams may wish to remove a sub due to the roster size decreasing.

The Call of Duty League explained in a statement:

“With a new season comes new announcements across many fronts. Today we shared that we will be transitioning to starting roster sizes of four players per team for Season 2, marking a kind of ‘return to our roots’. This decision was made in close collaboration with our teams and players, and it was not made lightly. We know that this transition also brings new implications for both pro and amateur players with rostermania season fast approaching. Over the course of the offseason, we will share more news regarding plans for the 2021 Season — including details on maps, modes, formats, schedule, and more.”

The 2021 Call of Duty League season begins on September 14 and we will most likely see many roster changes during the offseason. While some teams may stick with a core four players, some may create entirely new rosters or we could possibly see some new franchise teams enter for Season 2. This will be an intense offseason for players and viewers alike, and with the Multiplayer reveal imminent, we could see roster moves as soon as September 14.
