Bungie wants to be ‘one of the world’s best entertainment companies’ before 2025

Bungie would like to become one of the ‘best entertainment companies’ in the world before the year 2025, as stated in an interview with IGN.

In January, Bungie split from Activision in advance of their ten-year partnership deal. The publisher confirmed in a statement that Bungie would ‘assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise’, and likewise, Activision would be taking care of its own projects. Destiny 2 Shadowkeep releases this week, and it is Bungie’s first large-scale content update without Activision looking over its shoulder.

‘You think this is going to be a really big stressor, but it’s become a really bright shining spot on our ability to bring products to the marketplace and customers,’ Bungie CEO Pete Parsons explained. With this newfound flexibility and influence over its IP, Bungie is now planting the seeds of its ambitious five-year plan. ‘Our vision ultimately through 2025 is to become one of the world’s best entertainment companies,’ Parson stated.

Its first steps towards greatness is to contend with Destiny’s potential and its legacy. ‘One, is we need to begin transforming Destiny. The Destiny that we really believe in, like, the thing we think Destiny needs to become,’ he said. ‘I think you’ve seen it in the vid doc, like, the single evolving world, we needed to focus on that.’ Destiny 2 is free-to-play as the revamped Destiny 2: New Light. This bundles all of the content from the first year of Destiny 2 for all platforms, with some remastered sections of Destiny.

These transformations are set to be complete by 2025, as per Bungie’s ‘pretty specific path’. ‘So, by 2025 we have a pretty specific path to make sure we transform Destiny and that we have other franchises within the marketplace,’ Parsons revealed. The casual mention of a new IP has been formally announced by Bungie before, and it received investment from games technology company NetEase earlier this year.

‘I think the long-term vision of Bungie would be, we have worlds like Destiny that are great places to go and build friendships in. And we begin to introduce new worlds that people care a lot about,’ he concluded..

Destiny 2 Shadowkeep is out on October 1 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
