At a preview revealed at Gamescom, BioMutant will have players using wild and weird mechanics to traverse the open world and battle monsters (via FExtraLife).
The world of BioMutant is a colourful kaleidoscope of decay and destruction. In one section, it looked like the mutated character was clambering across a rusted, old industrial zone. The Mucus Bubble is an ability that cushions great falls and can even collect enemies on its sticky surface, to then throw them at terminal velocity after it pops. Although… useful, I think I’ll skip out on that evolution.
Combat is cartoony and cutthroat, in equal measure. Stunning enemies will cause a little cloud of stars and lightning bolts above their heads, and attacks satisfyingly snap with ‘Raaaaah!’ and ‘Smash!’. There seems to be a wealth of weaponry available, like melee swords, hand cannons, and pistols, with plenty of opportunity for slo-mo finishers.
The character will be able to use mounts to dash across the land, or soar high above it. Moreover, the extent of the role-playing elements appear to be significantly impactful and extensive. As the strength, vitality, charisma, intellect, agility, and luck traits change, the physical appearance of the BioMutant morphs and shifts. A genetic code is placed in the corner, which I’m guessing may be shareable with the wider community if players splice up a beastie they’re especially proud of.
BioMutant will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Watch the gameplay preview below.
